BLOGGING:
You will be assigned a blogging week when you must post a 2-page analysis of a popular trend or text that you will consider in your longer research paper. Before you post your analytical discussion of the piece or trend, type your work in a word document to ensure the appropriate length and make revision easier. You can then copy/paste your writing into the blog for posting. You must embed a photo, gif, clip, song, or other online media in your post to provide an example (or examples) of the trend/text you’re analyzing.
The purpose of this blog post is to practice analyzing a primary text that you will use in your research paper. Your post must:
1. Describe or summarize the object you’re analyzing
2. Analyze the significance of the features you note in your description or summary. What do these features suggest about the work’s audience, genre, or historical pedigree, for example? What do you think this object suggests about popular culture?
3. Hypothesize why this object is currently popular and among whom.
4. Note the object’s relation to any older historical trends or texts, or speculate on this history if you are not yet sure. As you develop your research project, you will be tasked with uncovering any historical origins of the text or trend.
COMMENTING:
You will be assigned to two students on whose blog posts you must comment. Your comment should identify the strengths and weaknesses of the blogger’s analysis and suggest further questions they might consider as they integrate their primary text into the research prjoect. You will work with these students as the semester develops and you will be responsible to one another for generating discussion about your research projects and helping one another think through the direction the project is taking. Your comments should be roughly 1/3 of the length of the blog post to which you’re responding.
