Reality TV Spoof

1948 marked the beginning of the Reality TV era with the first show being Candid Camera, which was an American hidden camera and practical joke reality TV series. This show created a new genre of television in which every day people are put into certain situations and followed by a camera to capture their reactions. Viewers enjoyed watching these people get pranked. Many series have followed, making Reality TV one of the most consistently popular television trends in history.
One of these very successful reality TV shows is The Real Housewives franchise, which constitutes of multiple very successful series. The show documented the lives of multiple housewives throughout different regions of the US. This trend began in 2006 with the Orange County housewives. It focused on the drama and fights that these women had with other people and with each other. Past experiences, such as cheating husbands and unresolved conflicts were often the beginning of every argument in the show. Now a days the public looks at most of these women as stuck up, snobby, dramatic individuals. The buzz about these shows only grew greater and greater. The true success behind this franchise and other reality tv shows is the crave that the American viewers have for drama.
In the case of The Real Housewives of Orange County, the show is very heavily formatted and sometimes even scripted. The events are usually planned before shooting begins. An example of this was clearly seen back in November 1, 2011 when a producer of the show wrote to the ex-husband of one of the stars, Tamra Barney, to see if he would be willing to participate in a staged scene after the couple’s harsh divorce. As in movies, the lives of these individuals are exaggerated and small problem become huge fights, romantic events are fairy tale like, and life just seems to be either so much better or so much worse than the viewers. At the start of the show, the viewers were able to relate to it and felt compassion when devastating events happened, and felt genuinely happy when the “actresses” were faced with a positive event. As time went by, viewers began to realize the phoniness behind these types of shows and felt that the women were being over dramatic and fake. This began the era of the spoofs; one of these being The Real Husband of Hollywood.
The Real Husbands of Hollywood is an American comedy reality TV parody which airs on BET. It was created to make fun of reality television. Unlike other television shows, this show is actually scripted to create a surreal life in Hollywood mocking rich, dramatic women. The cast is made u of comedians Kevin Hart and J.B. Smoove, actors Nick Cannon, Boris Kodjoe and Duane Martin, and artists Robin Thicke and Nick Cannon. The first episode focuses on introducing the characters. Each character is introduced with a certain characteristic.
The star of the show, Kevin Hart, is introduced as having a show-off lifestyle in comparison to the women in the original show. J.B. Smoove gives the aspect of jealousy and distrust based on the number one reason for the drama in the shows. Boris’ character portrays that well-known woman that thinks she is too pretty for her own good. These are just some examples of the exaggerated comparison the spoof makes to the housewives series. This show directly targets viewers who have a negative conception of the original show and tend to make fun of it. After realizing how fake reality TV really is, viewers began to grow a resentment towards the characters in each show. Seeing other famous actors make fun of these individuals in a non-harmful way, it gives the viewers a sense of enjoyment. Basically, the show target people who hate reality TV and understand the falseness of it.

Selfie

SELFIE

Companies spent most of their professional life developing and improving new products. Canon for instance has been in the electronic industry since 1937, supplying the world with the best photography instruments. As well as its main competitor, Nikon has been developing consumer electronics for over 90 years. As you can tell, both firms have put in a lot of effort in developing the finest products in the market, and their high quality control has managed to keep them in business for such a long period. In the early 2007, a new phenomenon emerged that bombarded the market with this revolutionary product that would change consumer’s life. The first iPhone modernized individual’s daily routine; now everyone could virtually connect with anyone around the world thorough this portable computer. Not only did Apple Inc. established a new trend making their product one of the hottest in the market, but it also created this new trend that we now know as “selfie”.
Apple Inc. is now the second most sold camera in the world according to Flickr. The statistics shows that Canon still in the lead with over 200 models available, followed by Apple with only 15 models, Nikon follows with an inventory of about 180 models. And it seems like this urge of taking pictures is exponentially increasing in the last couple of years. The idea of snapping a quick “selfie” has become such a trend that in August 2013 the OxforDictionaries.com added it to its list of words.

The image above wraps up my previous comment of how this new trend is exponentially gaining popularity amongst individuals. There is this “competition” of who snaps the best selfie. I have seen selfies ranging from conferrable settings such as a bed, to gory selfies depicting a criminal act. In the image above you see a man running for his life, trying to escape the horns of a 1,200 pound bull, but even in such an intense situation in which his life is at risk, he manages to pull out his phone, and snap a quick selfie so he can later remember his adventure and share it with family and friends. I believe that this trend of selfie has emerged due to the fast growing social media. Individuals not only like experiencing new and exciting things, but enjoy sharing them with others. As mentioned above, I believe there is this constant competition of coming up with a great selfie shot. The internet has allowed us to connect with any user around the world, and the idea of having our selfie circulate the web excites most of us.  Therefore some individuals are prone to snap a selfie even if that act put his or her life in jeopardy, because for them the idea of having a great and exiting shot that highlights their moment, is more valuable than the results that may occur in that given situation.  I believe this trend of selfie is popular amongst the young generation who were born into this technological environment. But even my parents snap selfies once in a while, so if you ask me, this trend is popular among all ages and genders, because as stayed previously, individuals have the urge to share their experiences and moments with others, and what better way than snapping a quick picture of yourself at a given location?

Mirrored Sunglasses

Fashion, is a form of art where the artists come up with new masterpieces every season. Many of these masterpieces create a lasting effect on the fashion industry. In the recent years, we’ve seen the trend come and go, but some come to stay. For the past two years, a major trend of mirror sunglasses has been going on in the celebrity world. A pair of mirrored sunglasses is a must-have in every girl’s closet; they are currently ruling the fashion world with their chicness and attractiveness.
Mirrored sunglasses are sunglasses with a reflective optical coating. The lenses tend to give the wearer’s vision a brown or a grey tint that would help in vision. Mirrored sunglasses were initially introduced as sunglasses that are useful for conditions of sand, water, snow, or higher altitudes because the mirror coating decreases the amount of light passing through the lens. However, in the past few years, the purpose of these sunglasses completely changed. With their eye-catching reflective lens, mirrored sunglasses are a great way to spice up your look. You see celebrities, models, mothers, fathers, and even little kids walking in the streets wearing mirrored sunglasses, and looking better than ever! The growing trend of these sunglasses was particularly popular in last year’s Coachella festival.
This trend turned into a very popular cultures for countless reasons, mainly how it completely changes the entire look. Mirrored sunglasses are a balancing act; they give a formal black-and-white street ensemble the perfect pop of color, making the outfit look fabulous, casual, and effortless. The best part about a mirrored pair is that it is equally glam when paired with your fanciest attire, or most casual outfit. Mirrored sunglasses photograph brilliantly, so it is no surprise that we see Instagrammers and fashion bloggers rocking the trend from the beach to the street. Mirrored sunglasses look marvelous on aviators, wayfarers, round, and cat-eyed; you name it. Big name celebrities used to wear large dark black sunglasses to avoid public recognition and paparazzi. However, with this groundbreaking trend taking over, A-listers including, BeyoncĂ©, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Jessica Alba have been rocking them with all outfits and all seasons.
Mirrored sunglasses gained huge popularity within the past few years. They have been around for quite sometime, especially being used in sports, but never before have they made such a statement. The shine and color of these sunglasses attract people to the coolness and youthfulness of the look. It is a trend where a bit of 90s disco dancing meets cheeky teens in Spring break; it is an explosion of senses. When I see people wearing mirrored sunglasses, I see them as people who are interested in fashion, looks, and trends. The only downside of mirrored sunglasses, is that it might get to a point where wearing the same pair gets boring and too consumed. Ray Ban, Illestiva, and Cutler and Gross are some of the most famous sunglasses brands, with the most wanted reflective designs.
To me, my sunglasses are my favorite accessories. I lost count of the number of pairs I own. I used to think of mirrored sunglasses as “skiing sunglasses” and I refused to wear them, as I thought they looked “uncool”. Now, with the trend being increasingly popular, I refuse to take them off. However you decide to wear this trend, just have fun with it, make a statement, and don’t forget to smile to the camera! Yet, the question still remains; will this trend last?

Joey's Post

The first day of spring in 2006 marked the beginning of one of the largest and fastest

growing trends in recent history, as it was the day on which Twitter Inc. was founded, and

Twitter was launched as the newest form of social media. This application was the newest

version of Facebook or MySpace, allowing people to interact with each other over a new social

media outlet. However, what separates Twitter from the previous social media sites is that it

truly allows anyone to connect to anyone in a way previously impossible. What I mean is that

through Twitter anyone can be linked to not only their friends but their favorite athlete,

musician, celebrity, or literally anyone who has an account and doesn’t mind being followed

publicly. I believe that this is a huge development in the social media world, and is what

contributed to making Twitter such a quick and consistent success. Twitter works by allowing

one to post tweets which tell anything from what someone is doing to what they just ate to

anything else the individual feels like sharing, regardless of what it is. While previous social

media sites like Facebook allowed a similar platform, it didn’t allow the same type of connection

to the celebrities and athletes as people can now tweet at, retweet, and possibly even be followed

by their favorite stars as well as friends and family. This large base of followers and ease of

which one can communicate with others is what has made the application so popular and still

relevant rather than just another trend which died out soon after its inception.

The most important and main feature of Twitter is that it allows people to constantly let

other people know what they are doing or thinking, while allowing each person to see what

others are up to. In a world where people are more and more concerned with appearance and

how they portray themselves, this provides the perfect outlet. What this feature suggests is that

people do in fact want to be able to know what everyone else is doing without actually having to

ask, and Twitter provides exactly that opportunity. What I take from this is that the audience

which Twitter markets itself to is mostly a younger market, but however that is not entirely true.

While most teenagers and people in their 20s do have twitter, it extends to older generations as

well, especially when famous individuals become involved. Nowadays it’s almost impossible to

find a celebrity or superstar athlete who doesn’t have a twitter page to keep fans updated on what

they’re doing. What Twitter says about popular culture is that people are moving more towards

being public and staying involved with everyone they know, and that people really want to feel

involved in the lives of others.

Part of the popularity if Twitter is due to the fact that social media has been a popular

trend for a long while, and Twitter is just one of the newest and best developments in this field.

People will always want a new form of social media, yet Twitter has been able to remain

relevant and one of the largest social media sites in terms of use. When it comes to the

popularity of Twitter, no one demographic or group can be claimed as the target market as

Twitter is used by people of all ages around the world, which is part of the reason why it has

remained so popular.

When it comes to older trends which Twitter can be related to, one could think of any of

the social media sites which preceded it. The main ones which come to mind for me are

MySpace to a lesser extent, but much more so Facebook. MySpace is essentially outdated and

dead in today’s society, but Facebook is still in use by a large number of people. While

Facebook is still relevant, Twitter has clearly taken over as the most popular social media site

due to the ability people have to connect with so many different people. Part of this is due to the

fact that a public account on Twitter can be followed by anyone, whereas becoming friends on

Facebook is a more personal thing as it takes a mutual reciprocation. Ultimately, I see Twitter as

the most popular trend in social media today, and one which is not going away anytime soon.

For the popular trend, I have picked the large and growing market for computer tablets in the technology sector. The market has seen successful tablets like the Apple iPad or the Microsoft Surface, along with other tablets like the Amazon Kindle and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Tablets are usually touch-screen mobile computing devices, smaller than the size of a computer screen but larger than a smart phone. These tablets can accomplish tasks such as communication, entertainment, or other common forms of computing. Tablets were produced to established a more portable and exclusive form of computing. Along with portability, most tablets are lightweight and can accomplish many tasks that replace the need to carry around a laptop or access a desktop computer. After reviewing the advantages to having a tablet, the consumer might believe that the tablets are not affordable, but most tablets on the market are less expensive than the basic level laptop. This decrease in price is due to the decrease in hardware (such as keyboards and ports) but comes with disadvantages. The disadvantages include less compatibility to things such as printers and USB ports. Although these are some disadvantages, the advantages of computer tablets greatly outweigh the disadvantages.

To continue the study of this trend, we must ask ourselves what markets the tablet has reached in the past few years. The tablet is greatly involved in enterprise, education, and entertainment. Nowadays, when on a commercial flight, it is nearly impossible to not see at least one passenger with an Apple iPad or any other brand of tablets. The passengers can range anywhere from a businessperson, a child, or an average passenger.

In the business world, tablets can be used to facilitate communication or research. Businessmen would also rather carry around a light tablet when travelling or commuting rather than a heavier laptop computer. With advancements in technology, tablets also easily sync with your smartphones and desktop or laptop computers. Therefore, if someone needed to write out a long e-mail on a smartphone, that e-mail can be sent easily in the same manner from a larger keyboard on a tablet. Tablets are also compatible with the large amount of apps that have been introduced to stores such as the Apple App store or the Google App Store. Many of these apps can help with banking, communication, or research for the average businessman.

As for education, many schools around the country and around the world have began requiring or provide tablets for their students. The tablets for students would serve to facilitate communication between teacher and student, for example. As previously mentioned with the large market of applications, the stores offer thousands of educational applications that can involve individual or group education classes and learning experiences.

The entertainment industry has greatly benefited from the introduction and the trend of the tablets. Not only for social media but for TV, Movies, and music as well. Tablets have completely revolutionized the way someone can relax and enjoy their favorite form of entertainment. Social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are frequently visited through a tablet. As for TV and movies, the popular website Netflix is often visited through tablets. There are hundreds of other miscellaneous entertainment items that are often accessed through the use of tablets, such as games, sports, and music.

This trend has revolutionized the world of personal technology, and there are many questions to be asked referring to this trend. Will the use of tablets be temporary in the tech world or will it eventually be a larger part of the tech world? One also may ask how much more beneficial a tablet is over the use of a smartphone or a personal computer. If this product has reached out to so many markets of all ages and all occupations, the market will presumably seem to only grow from now on, unless there is a replacement to the practicality of a tablet. Although this product satisfies many, there is part of the market that does not enjoy the tablets, due to the distaste in touchscreens, or the absence of keyboard. Therefore, will there be significant changes in the future of the tablet? The following advertisement is a commercial for the most recent Microsoft Surface tablet, being compared to the most recent Apple iPad. The commercial refers to the impracticality of the iPad and the changes Microsoft has made to their tablet. When seeing the commercial, does it seem this tablet tablet could replace a laptop? The future of the tablet will have to determine a borderline between what is a laptop and what is a tablet.

Josh Zheng Group 2 Blog Post

The photo below depicts the opening of Printemps, a designer department store during tourist season in France. Customers are storming into the store as the security guards watch them. What do the customers have in common? Most, if not all, are Chinese. Having being Chinese and living in Europe, this image sums up the trend that I have realized: the need of designer items in the average Chinese’s possession.

Before we go into the trend, ask yourself one question, do these customers fit in the setting with the way they dress? Selfridge is obviously a high-end designer store. It has large glass stores, bright lights, and designer windows seen on the right corner. The buyers, however, would not be described as luxurious as the products that are displayed. Starting from the bottom up, the individuals on the far left are wearing running shoes, while everyone else is in UGG or UGG-like boots. Moving up, the same individuals on the left are in sweatpants, while the rest are in jeans or leggings. Finally, all of them are in the most basic winter jackets. The woman on the left even has a strap on hiking backpack on her while rushing in the store. Using her as an example and combine her clothing: sneakers, sweatpants, long brown winter coat, hiking backpack. These clothing decisions suggest middle class status, and oppose the atmosphere a designer store creates. When one picks up a fashion designer magazine, we vision sophisticated, upper class individuals who purchase the products. The security guards in suits standing in the middle allow us to understand the store’s intentions. Suits are for formal occasions, indicating that this is an elegant location; however, the juxtaposition against sweatpants, sneakers, and comfortable boots drastically contrasts this mood. Designer clothes are considered the summit of fashion; I am not a fashion expert, yet I can still tell that their clothing clearly does not match the degree fashion designer clothes give off. They simply do not match my image of Louis Vuitton customers who can spend thousands of dollars without an itch.
Similar facial expressions can be identified across the photo: glowing smiles that cannot contain their enthusiasm. The joy in their faces can be compared to reaching a goal. The woman in the front can’t hold her excitement that she has to cover her mouth, yet the smirk is still visible on her cheeks. These expressions tell us that they are not usual shoppers at Selfridges, perhaps maybe even first time ever. While it may be their first time at store, the guards’ body language informs us that this is a common situation. The Chinese customers are charging into the store like bulls, while the security stands there are watches, not moving an inch to restore order. It is ironic that this kind of behavior is tolerated at the luxury store; this suggest that it was expected or common and maybe even welcomed.
The trend that this photo entails is the Chinese people’s need to buy luxury goods abroad. New York Times repots that Chinese visitors in France spent about $890 million, more than any other nationality. They come mainly for the grand shopping centers such as Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. According to the director of international clines of Galeries Lafayette claims proudly that they are visited more than the Eiffel Tower. PATA found that the average Chinese tourist purchases $1,359 of goods per trip, most in the world.
Why is there such a need for luxury goods? Having growing up in a Chinese family in Europe, I have gotten some first hand experience behind this trend. Expensive luxury goods are perceived as signs of success and status. Perhaps after decades of communism and deprivation, they have highly valued foreign brands. From my experience, several adults are at the income level that should not own any, yet have several. They “pinch pennies” on private just to show off in public. Because luxury goods have become a symbol for status and Chinese culture is about gift-giving, there is no better gift than these products.
Another question arises: flagship stores exist in China, so why is the purchasing all occurring abroad? Financially speaking, designer brands costs 20 to 30 percent more due to luxury tax. On the other hand, as international visitors outside the EU, they are entitled to tax returns on value-added taxes. Historically, China has gained the reputation of fake goods from luxury hand bags and accessories to even milk powder. Consequently, the buyers have lost faith in the domestic stores and products, looking abroad for alternatives. Of course travel costs become a burden, but then going abroad has also become a “brag right.” The fact that this luxury brand product was purchased abroad further boosts its value.
For these reasons, it becomes evident that the Chinese culture is very status oriented. This trend has caught the attention of European countries, which are altering strategies to attract more Chinese tourist. The Lafayette will now have a special entrance for Chinese visitors and a Chinese radio operator. The UK has gone far enough to develop new visa application processes that allow easy access to Chinese tourists. On the down side if access was easily granted, the luxury will lose its “brag rights.” In addition, China was been revising its taxing policies to expand its domestic consumption. The future of this trend is looking unstable, but as for now the trend is steadily increasing.
